The message below was received from the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity Gustavo Velasquez.
It is with great excitement that I announce, on behalf of Secretary Castro and the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, an important step forward we are taking to affirmatively furthering fair housing (AFFH). As you may know, HUD published a proposed AFFH regulation last year that proposed to create a framework to support HUD recipients in their AFFH obligations by providing more information and tools about AFFH. The proposed rule introduced an Assessment of Fair Housing (AFH), a document that HUD grantees would use to analyze barriers to fair housing choice and set goals to address them as a proposed replacement for the current Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (AI).
Today, we are pleased to publish a draft of the AFH Assessment Tool for your review and comment over the coming 60 days. This is the first of two opportunities for public comment on the AFH Assessment Tool- the second will be for 30 days later in the process. Today we also: 1) provided a preamble that summarizes the content of the AFH and includes specific questions where we want your feedback; and 2) posted on HUDs website PDFs of the data and maps that we intend to provide to help grantees complete the AFH. All the materials are available at: http://www.huduser.org/portal/affht_pt.html.
I encourage you and other stakeholders to review this Assessment Tool and provide feedback through the government-wide public comment portal Regulations.gov. Thank you for working with us as we equip our communities with the tools they need to fulfill the goals of the Fair Housing Act.
