Call Your Representatives TODAY and Request an Increase in Funding for the Transportation-HUD Account in FY 2013

Several of NAHMA’s industry colleagues have organized a nationwide Congressional Call-in campaign both TODAY Tuesday March 27 and TOMORROW Wednesday March 28 to request increased funding for HUD programs in FY 2013. NAHMA urges you to call your Congressional Representatives ASAP in both the House and the Senate and ask them to contact the leadership of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and request that they support an increased 302(b) allocation for the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations Subcommittee in FY 2013.

Each year, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees divvy up Congress’s total spending for the year between the 12 appropriations subcommittees-including the Congressional Appropriations Transportation-HUD Subcommittees that provide funding to HUD-through the 302(b) allocation. This will determine how much money is available for all HUD programs in the FY 2013 Congressional appropriations.

However, the Transportation-HUD accounts received severe cuts in the FY 2012 appropriations. The account is once again being targeted for deeper cuts in FY 2013. Furthermore, there will be fewer total dollars available to divide between the Appropriations Subcommittees in FY 2013 because of the sequestration and discretionary spending caps approved by the Budget Control Act last August. This means that all of the Congressional Appropriations Subcommittees will be vying for fewer appropriations dollars than were allocated in FY 2012. Without your grassroots advocacy assistance, this could mean a lower 302(b) allocation for the Transportation-HUD Subcommittee in FY 2012, which would reduce the funding available for HUD programs like project-based Section 8, tenant-based Section 8, Section 202 and 811, HOME, and CDBG.

NAHMA and our affordable housing industry colleagues strongly support a higher 302(b) allocation for the Transportation-HUD Subcommittee in FY 2013 (in comparison to FY 2012) in order to ensure there is adequate funding for all HUD programs, including full-funding for all housing choice voucher and project-based Section 8 contract renewals, as well as Section 202 and 811 PRACs. These programs house America’s most vulnerable families (including the elderly, disabled, formerly homeless, and veterans), create jobs, and help stimulate state and local economies. To help supplement NAHMA’s advocacy efforts to protect these critical programs here in Washington, DC, we strongly urge you to call your Congressional Representatives ASAP in both the House and the Senate and ask them to contact the leadership of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and request that they support an increased 302(b) allocation for the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations Subcommittee in FY 2013.
